Holiday home in Palkonya, the pearl of southern Hungary
Palkonya is the very first village on Hungary’s most famous wine route. The surrounding hills, of volcanic origin, have made the name of the red wines of Villany and the whites of Siklos famous. In the far South of Hungary, 20 kilometres from the city of Pécs, set amidst hills and vineyards, ponds and lakes used for fish farming, the village enjoys a Mediterranean microclimate. The region is ideal for horse riding, fishing, cycling, walking… or just taking it easy. Palkonya has 370 inhabitants, and more than 60 traditional wine cellars sit cheek-by jowl along the single street running through this beautiful village in Baranya County. |

The house... The former Swabian farm at the very heart of the village was built long before the last world war. It consists of a number of buildings ranged around an internal courtyard. The architecture is typical of the region. The courtyard... The courtyard, screened from the street by a very beautiful forged iron gate, is bounded on the left by the main house, by the small house on the right, the wine cellar with its tasting corner, the smoking house, the pigsty with its corn silo, the workshop on the far side and a very large room currently given over to porcelain painting. This has two large guest rooms, each with its own bathroom, and the very comfortable main accommodation consisting of a large living/dining room, a fully fitted kitchen and a bedroom with bathroom. The main house This has two large guest rooms, each with its own bathroom, and the very comfortable main accommodation consisting of a large living/dining room, a fully fitted kitchen and a bedroom with bathroom. The little house... Built around a traditional tiled stove, this painstakingly decorated independent accommodation combines a fully fitted kitchen, a bathroom and a large bedroom with satellite TV. At the heart of the courtyard lie the cellar (more than 7 meters long) and a rustic little tasting room. In fine weather, a vine-draped pergola invites you to sit back and savour the different wines the region has to offer. The garden... The rear of the house gives onto a garden of approximately 3 000 square metres, about half of which is a market garden, a new orchard with more than 20 fruit trees, a herb garden and a recreational garden with numerous decorative trees and a pétanque area. The rear of the house extends into a partly-roofed 4-meter wide terrace with a full kitchen and barbecue. |
